Memphis Gay & Lesbian Bars and Clubs

The Memphis gay scene is not so dissimilar to New Orleans -- a hard body is good to find, but it don't mean nothin' if you can't relax, drink up and enjoy a little blues. Memphians pride themselves on their lack of Yankee pretense. They certainly have attitude, but not in the conventional sense that more "cosmopolitan" cities proffer. Instead, attitude here is about being relaxed, enjoying the moment and, of course, getting that hot boy/chick/lady/stud off the dance floor and into their car. While the entire lesbigay community is not so low-key, most emphasize the experience of the evening, whether it be a trip down Beale, a blues bar or a dance club, then the end result (i.e., the bedroom). Perhaps that's why so many gay clubs don't get started until the wee hours. For most of the night, gay Memphians are living it up locally, regardless of gender preference. There is not much of a gay neighborhood to speak of, and bars are generally located in the less populated, low income neighborhoods surrounding Madison Avenue in mid-town Memphis.

Backstreet Memphis

2018 Ct. Ave., Memphis, Tennessee; Tel. 901.276.5522
The enormous dance floor and constant beats in Backstreet Memphis make this Memphis gay bar one of the most popular clubs in all of Tennessee. Renovations expanded the club for even more room to drink, dance and converse. The Memphis gay bar and nightclub features nights for karaoke, cabaret and even beer specials throughout the week. Anyone in search of a Memphis gay bar is sure to have a great night at Backstreet Memphis.

J Wags Bar

1268 Madison Ave., Memphis TN; Tel. 901.278.4313 A Memphis institution, J Wags serves up beer and set-ups (mixers, in the Yankee lexicon) to a local neighborhood crowd. Don't let the dour outside of the bar fool you. This 24-hour hotspot only warms up when the other Memphis bars close. Should you hit it at an off hour, a jukebox with over 8,000 songs provides patrons with hits ranging from Stevie Nicks to Martina McBride, with a healthy dose of Justin Timberlake and Nelly to boot.

Lorenz's

1528 Madison Ave., Memphis TN; Tel. 901.274.8272 A dive bar to end all dive bars, Lorenz's offers the beer, Levi and leather crowd an uncomplicated lounge to enjoy the latest from Memphis folk like Sheryl Crow and Elvis Presley. The large men and the boys that adore them are happiest tossing back discounted domestic beers while dancing to the latest country and western hits.

Madison Flame

1268 Madison Ave., Memphis TN; Tel. 901.278.4313 1588 Madison Ave., Memphis TN; Tel. 901.278.9839 While Madison Flame caters to the ladies, it certainly does not exclude the XY contingent that flocks to the bar for its legendary karaoke nights. Unlike San Francisco, New York and other gay "meccas," the Madison Flame is a city bar that welcomes all genders, regardless of the ability to perform.

Metro Memphis

1349 Autumn Ave., Memphis, Tennessee; Tel. 901.274.8010
The lively nightlife and hot bodies at Metro Memphis make this gay bar and dance club a popular hotspot for folks from all walks of life. A great happy hour menu with happy hour prices, lively DJs and a huge dance floor make this gay club the perfect place to meet people, have a late-night snack or just dance the night away. There’s a new special event every night of the week at Metro Memphis, from amateur drag shows to karaoke and even beer busts. There’s no doubt about this gay bar, Metro Memphis has something for everyone.

Pumping Station

1382 Poplar Ave., Memphis, Tennessee; Tel. 901.272.7600
The two-drink minimum—or should we say requirement—at The Pumping Station is a must to get in the mood for the gay friendly, leather, denim and bear atmosphere. This rough Memphis gay bar serves up stiff drinks while TVs surrounding the bar constantly play XXX videos. After finishing the two obligatory drinks, the men at Pumping Station surely won’t complain about the porn being shown on screens throughout the Memphis bar—not that they were complaining before the two drinks. Friendly bartenders help patrons get loose and weekly events keep things fresh at the gay bar. Visitors should consider checking out this gay-friendly dive to see what keeps regulars coming back for more.
