College bars are awesome for several reasons, perhaps most notably for being places where young crowds can go get totally sloshed for lunch on a Thursday and nobody will bat an eye. Luckily, Memphis has several such places where University of Memphis and other students gather for wild nights—or afternoons. Newby’s Bar & Restaurant seems to always be packed with a crowd that is always up for a good time. 14 TVs also make this Memphis college bar a popular place to watch the game. Zinnie’s caters mostly to the Rhodes crowd, but patrons of all kinds are always welcome there. Bobcat Bar & Grill is another fun college bar that serves up greasy food and cheap, frosty pitchers. When being drunk inappropriately early seems like a good plan, Memphis’ college bars are always there for you.

Newby’s Bar & Restaurant
539 S. Highland, Memphis, Tennessee; Tel. 901.452.8408
Strong drinks and a young college crowd characterize Newby’s Bar & Restaurant, located a few miles east of Beale Street. University of Memphis students—current and alumni—gather here to play billiards on one of the four pool tables, watch the Grizzlies on one of the 14 TVs or just hang out on the huge patio. Also famous here are the barbeque chicken sandwiches that are always hot off the grill and various local and national bands that play in the enormous auditorium. Newby’s is hard to pass up for anyone who wants to be around a young, lively crowd and love live music.

Zinnie's
1688 Madison Ave., Memphis, Tennessee; Tel. 901.726.5004
Rhodes students may dominate Zinnie’s, but this Memphis bar is a great place for anyone to visit for food, drinks and fun. Pool tables and dartboards provide activities for patrons to entertain themselves while downing pitchers of cold beer. Regulars flock to Zinnie’s when all-you-can-eat crab legs are on the menu, but be sure to call ahead because this deal isn’t offered all the time. The large patio is perfect for outdoor dining or cooling off with a cocktail from the bar during hot summer nights. Zinnie’s is a Memphis dive bar brings energy and excitement to nightlife in the River City.
